Piedmont Pipe Downspout Adapters are the attractive solution to ugly downspout connections.
About Piedmont Pipe
Owner and President Lewis Barton grew up in central New Hampshire. As a child Lewis was always inventive, and at age 14 applied for his first US patent. He was shortly thereafter recognized as the youngest individual to have had his own patent drawings accepted by the United States Patent Office. He was recognized by Vice President George H.W. Bush and was featured on the “David Letterman Show”, “That’s Incredible”, and “Real People” for his achievements. At age 16 Lewis began his college studies at Harvard University.
Lewis’s family owned and operated a successful civil construction company where Lewis used his skills to become a Divisional Manager in the Utility Division. Lewis then moved to North Carolina in 1999 and started his own utility construction company, Piedmont Pipe Construction. Lewis continues to be a problem solver, and uses his inventive ideas to address issues in the civil construction industry.
Piedmont Pipe Construction began performing site utility construction at several public school projects in Charlotte North Carolina area, where he quickly discovered a reoccurring problem. It seemed as though there was never an acceptable solution to tie the square roof drain piping into the round rainwater collection piping. He then began to research a cost effective and aesthetically pleasing product to make this often awkard connection. After researching all the available products on the market Lewis presented his results to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District and asked them to select one of the products. The local school designers liked some of the components from some of the products, but could not agree on any one of the existing products to use as a standard for construction. Lewis took matters into his own hands as he has always enjoyed solving problems. He developed a prototype downspout adapter using the “wish list” compiled from the local school designers. Hence, the Piedmont Pipe Downspout Adapter was born. Lewis presented a prototype one week later which was embraced with overwhelming approval. The Piedmont Pipe Adapter was adopted as a standard for all future school construction in Mecklenburg County.
Lewis soon realized that his downspout adapter had solved a problem that many owners, architects, and engineers have encountered in both public and private construction projects. The Piedmont Pipe Downspout Adapter was patented in December of 2009 and continues to evolve under Lewis’ leadership. “We continue to perform research and have developed several new prototypes that are currently in the patent-pending stage”.
As “Green” construction continues to gain momentum, rainwater collection and storage is becoming a standard in LEED building design. “We have created a unique specifiable product that is both ascetically pleasing and extremely cost effective and allows for the connection between the roof drain system and the rainwater collection system to be easy and effective.”
